For our summer holiday of 2019, Suzanne and I went to Morocco – a colourful land of many faces.

We spent two weeks in total and visited the capital Rabat, the blue city of Chefchaouen, ancient Fes, bustling Marrakech, the Roman ruins of Volubilis, Meknes, and the picturesque Imli Valley in the High Atlas mountains (in full sight of Mt Toubkal). Following a brief interlude in the Sahara desert, we finished our journey at Essaouira on the Atlantic coast, before returning to Casablanca for our flight back home.

During our stay, we walked and climbed, we rode mules and camels... and took a flight on a hot air balloon. We enjoyed the traditional hammam and learned of the magical properties of black soap and argan oil. We relaxed in the shady courtyards of our beautiful riads, sipping mint tea and listening to the chirping birds and the gentle gurgle of the fountain. We discovered a deliciously aromatic cuisine (spicy, but never exceedingly hot), a diverse landscape and a welcoming people, rooted in tradition but increasingly open to a more modern lifestyle.

As usual, we came back with aching feet, beautiful memories and hundreds of photos. This one, taken at the leather tannery in Fes on a hot August afternoon, is the first. Stay tuned for more...
